The Ultimate Road Trip by Bicycle – Road trips have always been the ultimate way to spontaneously get away. But what if you could go roadtripping by bike?
Going anywhere on a bicycle allows you to see so much more than when you’re zipping by in a car. And if you really want to get out in nature, the Bryce & Zion National Park Backroads Journey is perfect. You’ll spend six days peddling through some of America’s most pristine landscapes. You’ll begin at the Navajo cliffs of Snow Canyon and continue on to the Queen’s Garden in Bryce. From there, you’ll head to Red Canyon and finish up at Zion Canyon. On your journey, you’ll spend your nights at inns in the area that offer incredible views of the entire national park. Packages include meals, lodging, and even bicycles.
Sounds amazing, right? But what if you could take a biking tour like this, only self-paced? And what if you could begin at one end of the United States and bike across one single trail to the other side?
The recently announced Great American Rail Trail is being brought to life by Rails-to-Trails Conservancy. Once completed, this incredible biking trail will cover 12 states between Washington in the west and Washington, D.C. in the east. This singular trail will follow the railways through such famous trail systems as:
• Hennepin Canal
• Caspar Rail
• Capital Crescent
The bike trail will also pass through the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Park. By not having to contend with vehicular traffic, cyclists can truly experience the majesty of the varied American landscapes. What better way to enjoy America?
Rails-to-Trails has stated that this venture could be a decade or more in the making, but that 52% of the trail has already been completed. Where there are gaps in the trail, new trails will need to be built, but they are working with various local community groups where these trail gaps exist to see the project to completion.
When the project is complete, prepare to ditch any other travel plans you may have had for the perfect active family getaway.
